The American Film Institute (AFI) has released its latest list of the top 100 American movies. Yes, Lawrence of Arabia and Schindler's List are Americana, apparently, and some of my favourites.
The top 10 films are:
1. Citizen Kane (1941)
2. The Godfather (1972)
3. Casablanca (1942)
4. Raging Bull (1980)
5. Singin' In The Rain (1952)
6. Gone With The Wind (1939)
7. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
8. Schindler's List (1993)
9. Vertigo (1958)
10. Wizard of Oz (1939)
I'd like to have seen 12 angry men, 2001 A Space Odyssey, China Town or Taxi Driver up there.
There should be list that's a bit more 'popcorn' with a mix of cinematic quality, box-office quantity and cult status (not sure how one would measure that) with titles like Usual Suspects, Jacky Brown, Mars Attacks, Seven, The Driver (1978), Fight Club, Alien, Dark Star (1974), Pulp Fiction, Bullit, Blade Runner, The Thing (1982), The Shining, Unforgiven, The Graduate, Star Wars, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) just to name a few.
